We recently had the opportunity to help Ian and Jackson with a wheel chair accessible bathroom remodel. We are so appreciative that they shared their experience on Facebook, so that we could share just how life changing an accessible bathroom can be.
Ian and Jackson have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). “DMD is a fatal muscle wasting disease. Because the gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects males. Duchenne is caused by a change in the dystrophin gene. Without dystrophin, muscles are unable to function or repair themselves properly.”
Ian and Jackson’s parents mentioned that before the accessible bathroom remodel, it was difficult to bathe the brothers, and that it took two people to do so. They also said that brushing their teeth was very hard, because the wheel chair could not fit under the sink.
Our team installed a roll-in shower that allows the brothers to wheel their wheel chair right into the shower, leaving no barriers to keep them from rolling in. We also installed a wheel chair accessible sink that they can now roll their wheel chair right under. We finished it off with grab bars, and a portable shower head. What’s great is that their bathroom is now functional for them, and it looks amazing as well. A bathroom should be able to do both.
This will make a world of difference for their family. They now have a wheel chair accessible bathroom, that they can use safely.
